Hypoxia Chamber

Hypoxia is a state of reduced supply of oxygen. The Whitley Hypoxystation was developed to help researchers study cells and tissues under low oxygen tensions in a hypoxia chamber. The H35 Hypoxystation has proved of particular interest to those researching tumours.

As a tumor grows, it can outgrow its blood supply, leaving portions of the tumor with regions where the oxygen concentration is lower than in healthy tissues. Hypoxic tumor cells are usually resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy but they can be made more susceptible to treatment by increasing the amount of oxygen in them. The Hypoxystation allows researchers to study tumour cells at different oxygen concentrations, with different levels of carbon dioxide, different temperatures and different levels of humidity.
