Sree Ambal and Lars Nordbruch with the Whitley A35 Workstation

A35 Welcomed in Malaysia

Customer Sree Ambal of KPJ Lablink Central, Kuala Lumpur is very pleased with her new Whitley Workstation. Here she explains how they have moved to the A35 from using jars and have significantly improved their results:

“The Whitley A35 Workstation is very user friendly, easy to use and is equipped with important features, eg the ability to monitor the level of oxygen in the chamber.

We can also record temperature level and oxygen level in the chamber. There is an alarm system that will alert the user if the oxygen level increases inside the chamber. The airlock system features a double door, which ensures the system is truly anaerobic before the user starts their work.

More importantly, there are tremendous changes in our results from when we used jars. Almost every day we are reporting anaerobic organisms now that we are using the A35. This workstation has made a real difference and we are now very confident in reporting anaerobic organisms.”

Don Whitley Scientific opens new doors to visitors

With Don Whitley Scientific now firmly settled in its new home, Victoria Works, Bingley, visitors are now invited to a new showroom. This fabulous area boasts a permanent display of a wide range of Whitley products. Recently, a visitor from an increasingly relevant research topic in microbiology was the first visitor to the new premises.

Over the years, DWS invited many visitors to the old premises in nearby Shipley, from where the business ran successfully for over 30 years. However there were limitations on what products could be demonstrated due to the size of the old showroom. At Victoria Works the showroom is the ideal place for customers to come and really experience our range of workstations. You can try out some of the different porthole systems to see which would be the most suitable for your laboratory or look at the different options for size of airlock. We can sit down with you and discuss your application, your projects, what equipment you might want to use inside the chamber, the challenges you face, and what you need to achieve from the purchase of a Whitley Workstation.

The Whitley i2 Instrument Workstation – Designed to accommodate Seahorse Extracellular Flux (XF) Analyzers in relevant conditions

Having a laboratory at Bingley provides additional benefits in that we have both microbiology and tissue culture experts on hand to give expert advice if and when required. We also have people who design and manufacture our workstations so if there is a slight modification or additional technical information required, we can get our R&D staff involved to discuss the possibilities.

The larger showroom now provides the option for bespoke areas to be created that reflect how different products may be used together in a lab environment. For example, sample preparation equipment (Smasher and Dilumat), spiral platers (Whitley WASP Touch) and colony counters (Protocol3). The size of the showroom also provides the option to display previous incarnations of DWS products, showcasing the evolution of products made possible through the work of our research and development team. For example you can see the evolution of Whitley Spiral Platers, with spiral plating being a process DWS helped establish and introduce to the world of microbiology.

Another way to view products is also provided by our 65″ screen. This offers the facility to showcase products, options and features with accompanying information and videos.

HEPA Filtration from Don Whitley Scientific

For over forty years, Don Whitley Scientific have utilised experience and expertise to ensure products make working methods more straight forward for our laboratory customers. With more and more importance placed on clean air, HEPA filtration can provide an extra measure to ensure research carried out within Whitley Workstations is done so in an environment that achieves particulate concentrations exceeding the levels detailed in ISO 14644-1 Part 1, Table 1, (Class 3) Classification of Air Cleanliness.

Tests have been carried out by Don Whitley Scientific that show just how much of a difference a HEPA filtration system makes to the atmosphere of a Whitley Workstation. Don Whitley Scientific have been manufacturing products for over 40 years and the introduction of HEPA filtration was a logical step to make sure our customers have an option that falls in line with the latest laboratory trends and requirements.

The benefits of the Whitley HEPA filtration system are:

  • The Whitley system utilises an internal HEPA filter. The atmosphere is cleaned quickly and continuously because the entire internal atmospheric volume of every Whitley Workstation passes through the filter hundreds of times an hour.
  • The atmosphere passing through the filter creates a laminar flow-like effect covering around 94% of the width of the chamber.
  • The location of the Whitley HEPA filter inside the workstation ensures it cannot get wet. Therefore it cannot become saturated with moisture and rendered ineffective.

Don Whitley Scientific has worked with one of the world’s leading filter manufacturers to develop a filter specifically tailored to suit the requirements of anaerobic workstations. Adding HEPA filter technology to the workstation means creating an environment where microbiology samples and cellular cultures can grow free from the risk of contamination.

HEPA filtration was introduced as an option after decades of experience in microbiology. We are confident that our thorough approach to product development and product testing has resulted in a HEPA filtration system superior to any other systems fitted to positive pressure modified atmosphere workstations. The video below explains Whitley HEPA filtration in further detail.

LumaScope in a Whitley Workstation

Time Lapse Microscopy in a Whitley Workstation

As there have been many advances over the years with Whitley Workstations, it’s interesting to see what new equipment can be used inside them in today’s laboratories in both routine and specialist applications.

LumaScope 400

LumaScope 400

One device that we know is being used in a Whitley Workstation is the LumaScope™ Live Cell Imaging Platform. Keeping it inside the workstation chamber provides more meaningful data, from happy cells without the issues associated with gaining access to conventional microscopes.
