Spiral Plating: Then and now

Sorting through the archives recently, we came across an edition of our customer newsletter from 1991 featuring an article on early spiral platers. The article gives a detailed explanation of the principles of spiral plating and provides a range of examples where this technique could be used to good advantage.

The technology used in Whitley Automated Spiral Platers (WASP) has come a long way in 27 years, yet the time saving to perform a threefold serial dilution on a single Petri dish are still as relevant today as they were in 1991.

New WASP Touch Spiral Plater Video

Don Whitley Scientific is pleased to announce a new video featuring WASP Touch, the spiral plater designed for the needs of modern microbiology laboratories. The video outlines the way in which spiral plating brings several cost and time savings to the laboratory, as well as discussing the options and accessories that are available to help tailor the system to your particular application.

If you haven’t already seen WASP Touch, here’s some background information on the product. If you need any further information, please see our website or contact us at

WASP Touch

Touchscreen spiral plater launched at international trade fair

Launched this week at Analytica, WASP Touch is a new spiral plater, designed for the needs of modern microbiology laboratories. This is a fundamentally different plater with no need for a separate vacuum source. The system is simple to use and provides real cost savings and process improvements.

WASP Touch features:

  • Touchscreen operation
  • New automatic sanitising system automatically maintains correct liquid levels in sanitising solutions – patent pending
  • Illuminated, covered working area.

Automated Intelligent Monitoring Software (AIMS) guides users through set-up and daily check routines to ensure consistent, trouble-free plating. Sample may be aspirated from beakers, bottles and tubes – providing maximum flexibility in use.

The system incorporates a powerful diagnostic tool that automatically logs date, time, deposition, user name and number of plates produced.

Precise quantities of sanitising fluids are dispensed automatically to maintain optimum levels. This ensures effective and efficient sanitisation takes place. Sanitising system reservoirs contain sufficient fluid for over 900 wash cycles.

A space-saving feature is the fully integrated vacuum waste system.

Robust, reliable and easy to service, WASP Touch eliminates serial dilutions and produces perfect plates.

SfAM Summer Conference

Don Whitley Scientific exhibited at this year’s Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM) Summer Conference, which was held in Dublin on 29 June to 2 July. The event was entitled “Fermented Foods and Beverages” and we took along a Protos 3 Automated Colony Counter and Whitley Automated Spiral Plater (WASP).

SfAM ran a competition for delegates and our donated prize, a hamper filled with goodies manufactured in Yorkshire, was won by Ogechukwu Elizabeth Okpalanozie of the University Of Lagos (pictured with Don Whitley).

Protos 3 Colony Counter

New Protos 3 Colony Counter

New Protos 3 colony counter and rapid ID system saves time and provides accurate, traceable results in microbiology

Don Whitley Scientific Limited introduces a vibrant new automated colony counting and chromogenic identification system, Protos 3. This system allows accurate and reproducible identification of colonies cultured on chromogenic plates.

What makes the new Protos 3 outperform other commercial colony counters is the system’s ability to count colonies in seconds and identify microbial species by their colour on chromogenic plates. This is a great time saver, providing accurate, objective and fully traceable GLP compliant results.

The stylish, yet practical Protos 3, which comes in bright red, attaches easily to a computer and requires minimal training to set up. Users simply input their plate identification and click. The Protos 3, featuring a highly sensitive CCD camera combined with unique three colour LED lighting, rapidly images an infinite number of colony colours on one plate and detects colonies as small as 0.043mm.

The Protos 3’s powerful software then generates true to life counts and plate images, which can be transferred and stored in Excel. This GLP compliant process, with its full audit trail eliminates keying and image transfer errors providing accurate, objective data, which can be reviewed anywhere and anytime.

“Microbiologists have always wanted a colony counter that combines throughput and automatic colony ID,” commented Steve Robertson, Sales Director. “The new Protos 3 offers a high performance platform that generates fully traceable data and we know it will be a huge time saving device for microbiologists in food and pharmaceutical laboratories. For anyone using a spiral plater for carrying out multiple bacterial enumerations, this is a perfect solution.”

Spiral Plating Techniques Recognised in New ISO 4833-2

The new ISO 4833-2:2013 standard specifies surface plating techniques for enumeration of microorganisms and includes a section covering spiral platers and automated colony counters. It does not recommend or approve the use of any particular product or brand name; however, it is general recognition of the use of spiral plating techniques in food microbiology and provides standardized procedures for their use.

If you are not already aware of the Whitley Automated Spiral Plater (WASP) – one of the industry leading spiral platers – and all the benefits to your laboratory, please have a look at our website.
