Biological Sciences Poster Prizes for Leeds University

On 2nd May 2019 our Head of Microbiology, Andrew Pridmore, visited the University of Leeds Faculty of Biological Sciences to present prizes to final year undergraduate students from the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology.

These prizes, sponsored by Don Whitley Scientific, are awarded each year for poster presentations of the students’ final year research projects.  These are divided into two categories – laboratory research and literature review.  The winners this year were:

Laboratory-based projects

1st Molly Mitchell – TTC1: A Novel Binding Partner of the Polyomavirus Agnoprotein

2nd Michael Walker – Transcriptomic Analysis of the AtrA Regulon in Streptomyces coelicolor.

3rd Anna Clay – A potential cancer therapy: A new oncolytic virus.

Literature reviews

1st Jessica Sweet – HPV-associated cancers to become a disease of the past?

2nd Isabelle Raynor – Operating on the genome: How can we use CRISPR-Cas9 in gene therapy?

3rd Charlie Menagh – A Review of Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T Cell Therapy

Once again, all posters were of a high standard and displayed to great effect in the Faculty’s new teaching laboratories.  Andrew was especially pleased to view students' work in the field of antibiotic susceptibility and, reflecting a very topical area of current research, the potential of the human microbiome as a source of novel antibacterial agents.

We wish the best of luck to all final year students, at Leeds and elsewhere, who are now taking their last examinations before graduating.
