WASP Inoculating and Streaking

WASP - the Walk-Away Specimen Processor - is a fully automated inoculating and streaking device that rapidly and efficiently manages the processing of liquid phase samples. This device provides a new way of working in today's microbiology laboratories where more samples need to be processed, with perhaps limited staff resources. This robotic device has been designed to process, inoculate and streak bacteriology swabs and urines in true walk-away fashion. The machine de-caps, inoculates, streaks, labels and then re-caps the container without operator intervention.

With this technology in your laboratory, doing the tedious, repetitive work for you, your MLAs can get on with performing more specialised, productive tasks. It also frees up bench space, giving everyone more room to work and, unlike your human staff, it can work 24 hours a day if you need it to! Standardisation of streaking is an important advantage with patterns available in the pre-programmed library or the option to create your own.

Another benefit of this device (manufactured by Copan) is that it can reduce the necessity to recall patients for repeat tests. Because of the liquid nature of the sample, there will be plenty of inoculum left to do repeat tests and PCRs.

Automatic streakingInoculating Loops

The Walk-Away Specimen Processor uses three metal loops to inoculate the plates. This trio set-up enables maximum speed for plate streaking eliminating any cooling delay between sterilisation. This loop system is the ONLY consumable required for this device but it can perform approximately 45,000 streakings before it needs changing.

Capacity

A 324 plate carousel is available as an option to allow you to process 324 urine specimen bi-plates in one run. Nine random access plate silos provide the flexibility to manage up to nine different types of culture media.

e-Swab

What makes all this possible is the e-Swab from Sterilin. The e-Swab automatically and spontaneously elutes the entire swab sample into liquid phase so processing throat, nasal and wound swabs is as easy as urine samples. There is no need to physically roll swabs on culture plates. You can choose from a variety of programmed standard streak patterns or even create your own.
