Parkside School

MD Speaks at Local School

Earlier today, Paul Walton (Managing Director of Don Whitley Scientific), gave a presentation to 180 thirteen and fourteen year olds at Parkside School, in Cullingworth, Bradford as part of a careers event. Paul stressed the importance of working hard at school and suggested students see school as a real investment in their futures – potentially ensuring they don’t spend a huge proportion of their lives in jobs they don’t like! He talked about the different roles at DWS and what students might need to study for roles such as these.

 

 

Paul gave some background information on DWS and the workstations that the company manufactures. He also spoke about the apprenticeship scheme at DWS, as one of the routes into manufacturing organisations.

2018 DWS Microbiology Prize Awarded

Earlier this year, we presented the annual Don Whitley Scientific Prize for Microbiology to the student who achieved the highest marks in Microbiology at the University of Bradford. The 2018 winner, Christiana Victoria Cismaru, gained a 1st Class Honours and said of her experience:

“I am honoured… this is a huge accomplishment for me, a reward for all the hard work and time I invested whilst at the University of Bradford. There was so much to learn… Choosing Medical Microbiology as my final year option allowed me to focus on the subjects I was most interested in and opened my eyes to current issues, such as emerging viruses and antimicrobial resistance; this has influenced me in choosing to pursue a research career in virology after graduation.”

Christiana will be going on to study for an MSc in Molecular Biology and Pathology of Viruses at Imperial College London and then hopes to pursue a PhD in the same research area; we wish her all the best in her future endeavours. She is pictured here with Dr Andrew Pridmore, Head of Science at Don Whitley Scientific and himself a recipient of the accolade in 1991.

How to Choose a Spiral Plater for Your Microbiology Laboratory

In this exclusive interview with rapidmicrobiology.com, Dr. Andrew Pridmore, Head of Microbiology at Don Whitley Scientific, discusses the benefits of using a spiral plater, what to look for in a system and how the new WASP Touch from Don Whitley Scientific (DWS) can help ensure your laboratory has consistent trackable, plating results.

Don Whitley Scientific introduced their first Spiral plater in 1978, why are they still relevant to today’s modern microbiology lab?
Much of the testing done back in 1978 when we first introduced spiral plating to the UK, is still relevant today. However, increased quality control measures have led to laboratories looking more to automation to help improve reproducibility and accuracy. Spiral plating offers a real reduction in the cost-per-test and standardises counting methods. Serial dilutions, for many users, can be eliminated, which in turn saves time, the cost of consumables and space in the incubator.

 

One of the key issues facing labs is calibration, validation and traceability, how can a spiral plater help with this?
Spiral plating techniques are recognised in the ISO 4833-2 standard. This is a general recognition of the use of spiral plating techniques in food microbiology and provides standardised procedures for their use.

Many spiral plating processes cannot be calibrated but with the WASP Touch, users can calibrate the delivery of the sample. There is also the option to include a bar code scanner. Traceability is facilitated with the inclusion of the Data Handling package for WASP Touch. This option records date, time, user, plate id, volume, date and at which volumes, date of the last start and finish position check, and date the last dye plate was performed. It also provides multi-level PIN-code protection. Data can be downloaded via USB in a format that can be loaded directly into Excel. An Ethernet connection for data transfer/service support is also included.

When choosing a new spiral plater what features should a buyer be looking for?
An automated spiral plater is ideal for those who regularly need to plate samples with a microbial content greater than 1,000 CFU/ml. Buyers should look for a plater that is flexible enough to process their particular samples, in terms of quantity and type of sample. For example, WASP Touch offers an Extended Volume Package to enable a wider range of volumes on a plate. Buyers should also consider the level of after-sales service, maintenance and support offered by the manufacturer. If you are opting for an automated method to speed up your processes, the last thing you want is for there to be a problem that causes an unacceptable level of downtime.

 

 

 

If a lab is getting an in-house demo for a spiral plater do you have any recommendations for how to test it?
At Don Whitley, we feel that any test should be as realistic as possible so would always look to perform a demo or trial with the actual samples the laboratory uses. After working through a demonstration with the customer, we would ideally arrange for them to have a spiral plater for an extended trial. This helps them to make a more informed purchase decision.

DWS have recently introduced a next generation spiral plater, what issues does this model address?
The new WASP Touch spiral plater simply modernises the process of spiral plating. The user interface is now a touchscreen with easy-to-use icons. Other features such as FlowSense ensure that the sample is correctly processed, alerting the user to any issues in time for corrections to be made; and AIMS, the intuitive software that guides users through the set-up routine.

If a lab wanted to introduce the new DWS spiral plater, what validation steps would be needed (is that the same if they were introducing spiral plating for the first time or upgrading to the new DWS system)?
WASP Touch, and spiral platers in general, require minimal validation because spiral plating methodology has already been validated and published in the international standard ISO 4833-2:2013.  The ISO standard includes methods for calibration and validation of the sample volumes deposited onto an agar plate by a spiral plater.

Investment in automation for PHE Public Health Laboratory in Manchester

The PHE Public Health Laboratory in Manchester, which is based at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT), has become the first Microbiology Laboratory in the North West to become automated using COPAN WASPLab (Walk Away Specimen Processor) technology.

Public Health England, the Department of Health and CMFT have all invested to support the introduction of a state-of-the-art automation system for the Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP) laboratory at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

The MMMP, which is a partnership between Public Health England and CMFT, will be significantly strengthened by the investment and the automation, which will assist in the introduction and implementation of new technologies, facilitate new laboratory processes and lead to major improvements in clinical diagnostics within the NHS.

Working with Don Whitley Scientific, two COPAN WASPLab systems have been installed in a completely refurbished laboratory.

The WASPLab is a total laboratory automation system; specimens received into the lab will be processed on the Walk-Away Specimen Processor (WASP), and then incubated automatically. Biomedical Scientists will no longer be faced with stacks of plates and manual inputting of results into the laboratory information system. Instead, they will be interpreting and reporting results from 27 megapixel images.

It has long been thought that Bacteriology was the last bastion of traditional manual techniques, but the way in which the plates are read and interpreted will change dramatically with the new system.The new laboratory was recently officially opened by PHE Chief Executive Duncan Selbie and Sir Michael Deegan, CMFT Trust Chief Executive.

The investment will lead to significant increases in specimen processing quality, traceability, capacity and reduction in turnaround times – all good news for our users and our patients.

See the WASPLab at ECCMID 2017 in Vienna

WASPLab to be shown at the forthcoming 27th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

Held in Vienna, this event brings together the world’s leading experts to discuss the latest developments in infectious diseases, infection control and clinical microbiology. The scientific programme features talks from key figures in antibiotic susceptibility testing, infection control and antimicrobial resistance.

Scottish Microbiology Association Spring Meeting

Don Whitley Scientific recently headed up north into the Cairngorms National Park to attend the Scottish Microbiology Association Spring Meeting at the Macdonald Resort in Aviemore. 

The meeting featured talks and presentations from various different people working in microbiology in Scotland, with topics ranging from antimicrobial resistance to invasive infections. The event gave Don Whitley Scientific a chance to interact and network with key figures in Scottish microbiology and discuss how the DWS product range may benefit their working methods.

Don Whitley Scientific had an A35 Anaerobic Workstation on their stand, equipped with many unique options and features. Many microbiology labs in Scotland are well aware of Whitley Workstations, already using them in their labs, however the meeting was a good opportunity to introduce the product to those who were looking for a more efficient and easy way to cultivate anaerobes.

WASP Touch Training for Spanish Distributors

As part of the continued roll out of the Whitley WASP Touch to our distributors around the world, Steve Robertson and Joe Walton recently visited Spain. Here they carried out Whitley WASP Touch training with our distributor there. This included a short refresher course on spiral plating techniques and bespoke WASP Touch demonstrations. The training was followed by a series of customer visits.

 

Feedback on the Whitley WASP Touch continues to be positive. In particular, the intuitive touch screen and automatic filling of the wash station are seen to be big positives in customers’ eyes. This, coupled with the reputation for quality of the WASP 2 (predecessor to the Whitley WASP Touch), continues to position the new spiral plater as a top quality laboratory device.

 

The Whitley WASP Touch is designed to fit the needs of modern microbiology laboratories. It is fundamentally different from its predecessors, with no need for a separate vacuum source.
