Calibrating a Workstation to UKAS standards

UKAS Calibration and Temperature Uniformity in Whitley Workstations

ISO 15189:2012 Medical Laboratories- Requirements for Quality and Competence requires medical laboratories to have documented procedures for the calibration of equipment that directly or indirectly affects examination results. Equipment calibration is also beneficial for laboratories  without specific accreditation. For example in research institutions it demonstrates compliance with internationally recognised quality standards and increases confidence in test results. This principle is particularly applicable to temperature controlled equipment, such as incubators and anaerobic workstations, which may be used during the isolation, enumeration or identification of bacteria.

Benefits

The benefits of temperature calibration, and temperature homogeneity throughout the working volume of an appliance, are well understood for conventional incubators because variability in performance can affect the numbers, sizes and other visual characteristics of bacterial colonies growing on agar plates, as well as bacterial growth rates in liquid culture. Microbiologists are also beginning to appreciate the influence of temperature and other environmental parameters on the growth and viability of anaerobic bacteria.

Fastidious Anaerobes

An increasing number of our customers use anaerobic workstations to grow highly fastidious, poorly characterized anaerobes, which have been identified in complex ecosystems using molecular techniques but, until recently, have not been cultured. For example, there is considerable current interest in the bacterial species which constitute the normal human gut microbiota and the role of these organisms in human health. The growth requirements for many of these species are not yet fully understood. Ensuring temperature stability and homogeneity throughout the working area of an anaerobic chamber provides an additional level of assurance when working with fastidious anaerobes and removes a potential variable when attempting to optimize their growth and study their physiology.

Temperature Mapping

If your laboratory must demonstrate that temperature performance could directly or indirectly affect results, the temperature mapping process provides independent, UKAS-accredited testing and supporting certification. It confirms that the workstation temperature is controlled and displayed within specified tolerances. This process comprises calibration of the workstation temperature sensor and a comprehensive temperature profile of the entire working and incubation area. Data is collected from up to 12 sensors, traceable to national standards, positioned throughout the workstation chamber.

How we achieve a uniform temperature gradient in Whitley Workstations?

This is achieved through careful design of the product, optimising air flow and temperature control to achieve the lowest possible temperature gradient. Don Whitley Scientific has been designing and manufacturing modified atmosphere workstations for over 40 years so have a wealth of experience in this area.

Whilst onsite, our engineers will not only take the time to explain the calibration procedure and why it is necessary but they will endeavour to provide your certification within 5 working days. This helps to make sure the whole UKAS process is as painless as possible for you and your staff.

End of an Era for Don Whitley Scientific

Production comes to a close in Shipley

The last Whitley Workstation to be manufactured by Don Whitley Scientific in Shipley has now rolled off the production line. This particular order was an A95 Anaerobic Workstation ordered by Jin Sung Unitech, Republic of Korea.

JS Unitech LogoAccording to Junghoon Hong of Jin Sung, “We had no idea that in placing this order, we would be commissioning the last ever workstation to be built at Don Whitley Scientific in Shipley. We have been distributing Whitley Workstations for 19 years and are very proud to have ordered the last one from the Shipley production line.”

Paul Walton added, “I am extremely happy that we are moving to bigger and better premises that will provide the opportunity to improve our production processes. Victoria Works will provide considerably more warehousing capacity plus new offices, a bespoke production area, service centre, R&D mezzanine and improved staff facilities including a large, fully fitted, air-conditioned canteen. There will also be a new product showroom where customers can view demonstrations of the latest anaerobic and hypoxic workstation technology.

“An element of nostalgia is, however, creeping in as we draw close to the move date. We have been manufacturing in  Shipley for over 40 years and I have seen many changes in those four decades. We will, however, focus on the positives and move the business forward to face the challenges of the next 40 years!”

When Don Whitley Scientific began making workstations, it was purely for the UK market. We now have over 4,000 workstations in over 50 countries.

It might be the end of one era but another, exciting one begins at our new premises in Bingley.

At the Institute, George Poulogiannis uses a combination of Whitley i2 Instrument Workstation (with Seahorse XF Analyzer) and Whitley H35 Hypoxystation in his research into breast cancer. Hypoxia is a key factor in the “Hallmarks of Cancer” and this team are studying the role of hypoxia in cell invasion and metastasis, oncogene-induced senescence and resistance to current treatment options. This combination of Workstations is also used by Dr Ayse Latif, who is researching gynaecological cancers at The University of Manchester.

Scottish Microbiology Association Spring Meeting

Don Whitley Scientific recently headed up north into the Cairngorms National Park to attend the Scottish Microbiology Association Spring Meeting at the Macdonald Resort in Aviemore. 

The meeting featured talks and presentations from various different people working in microbiology in Scotland, with topics ranging from antimicrobial resistance to invasive infections. The event gave Don Whitley Scientific a chance to interact and network with key figures in Scottish microbiology and discuss how the DWS product range may benefit their working methods.

Don Whitley Scientific had an A35 Anaerobic Workstation on their stand, equipped with many unique options and features. Many microbiology labs in Scotland are well aware of Whitley Workstations, already using them in their labs, however the meeting was a good opportunity to introduce the product to those who were looking for a more efficient and easy way to cultivate anaerobes.

Realising the potential for synthetic biology

At Don Whitley Scientific we love to hear about the different applications and scientific disciplines in which our workstations are used. We recently came across a video of a presentation at the World Economic Forum in 2015. The clip is entitled: “Hacking exotic organisms and putting them to work“. Dr John Heap, who is an academic scientist and research group leader at Imperial College London, talks about harnessing diverse organisms including anaerobic bacteria, and realising the potential of synthetic biology for a variety of applications.

Clostridium difficile studies can be done in a Whitley Workstation

Whitley Workstation used in Clostridium difficile study

The Whitley A35 Workstation has recently been used by a group at Monash University in a study relating to toxins affected by Clostridium difficile.

This very interesting research paper, entitled “CdtR Regulates TcdA and TcdB Production in Clostridium difficile“, was written by researchers at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The results from the study “establish CdtR as an important virulence regulator in two clinically important, epidemic strains of C. difficile, and further highlights the need to investigate regulatory mechanisms of important virulence factors in diverse strain backgrounds.”  The paper proves for the first time that “TcdA and TcdB production is linked to the production of CDT by a common regulatory mechanism”.

Don Whitley Scientific in Spain

The Don Whitley Scientific demonstration truck is currently making its way through sunny Spain! Accompanied by our sales team, the truck is visiting various research and clinical institutes throughout the country to discuss how DWS equipment may enhance and benefit a range of scientific applications.

The demonstration vehicle is becoming an increasingly useful resource, enabling DWS to visit customers around the continent to demonstrate a wide range of equipment. The truck has previously been to Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria) as well as sites across the UK and is now visiting existing customers and distributors, as well as potential new customers, in Spain.

Last week saw the trip begin, with Joe Walton and Sally Shelton setting off from Portsmouth on a ferry to Bilbao. The first destination was Pamplona, where Joe and Sally met up with Sandra Berges from our Spanish distributor, Nirco, to visit existing and potential customers in the area. The truck provided Sally and Joe with the ability to demonstrate products and have an area to  discuss any potential sales with our customers. It also allows us to obtain customer feedback on how our equipment works in their lab, in this case a Whitley H35 Hypoxystation, which the customers were actually very happy with.

The next day involved a long seven and a half hour drive to Barcelona. Once in the capital, the team visited a hospital to see current customers who are using Whitley products in various research based applications. Next stop was the research building at another  hospital in the area where visitors to the truck displayed a clear interest in the Whitley Hypoxic Workstation.

The last day of this part of the road trip involved visiting some existing customers at a research centre in Barcelona, their research involves Treponema denticola and Tannerella fosythia, which need strict anaerobic conditions to grow. The researchers at this institution have been using Don Whitley Scientific equipment for 20 years and discussed replacing one of the older models they had with one from the more modern Whitley Workstation range.

We would like to say a big thanks to Sandra from Nirco as the trip was a very worthwhile experience.
